National Diabetes Alert Day

Today is National Diabetes Alert Day.  This a call to action by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) for Americans to take the Diabetes Risk Test to determine one’s risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.  The seven question survey can be completed online and asks for basic information such as your gender, ethnicity, body weight and diagnosis of high blood pressure.  Diabetes is a problem in your body that causes higher than normal blood sugar levels, also known as hyperglycemia.  Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes and can be prevented.  Things that can prevent type 2 diabetes include: maintaining a health weight, exercising regularly and eating healthy.

The Diabetes Foundation Inc, located in Paramus, NJ, is dedicated to improving the quality of life for individuals with diabetes.  This is a great organization that helps individuals with diabetes gain control over their condition.

Individuals with diabetes are twice as likely to develop hearing loss as those who do not have diabetes.  The link is believed to be that the high blood glucose levels can cause damage to the blood vessels in the inner ear which will cause hearing loss.

If you have concerns about your risk for diabetes it is important that you discuss them with your physician.  If you have concerns about your hearing it is important that you have your hearing tested.  Please contact our office for a free hearing screening or schedule a full hearing evaluation.
